Rebate Checks on the Way: Be Prepared

Posted by Dave Cosper on Monday, May 05, 2008

Beginning May 2, millions of people will begin receiving rebate checks from the IRS as part of the economic stimulus package. Most retailers are eyeing these rebates as a way of boosting their sales, and many already have plans to offer special targeted sales to get shoppers to spend the cash at their stores. Small business owners should consider this a prime opportunity and be proactive about marketing their products and services to consumers looking to spend the extra cash.

Most individual taxpayers will see checks in the amount of $600. Married couples who qualify for the full amount can expect twice that with an additional $300 per child. The federal government is issuing more than 800,000 rebate checks electronically in the first wave this week.

Hit with a barrage of questions regarding this year’s tax rebates, the IRS recently launched a fairly helpful EconomicStimulusPaymentsInformationCenter on their site. If you’re looking for your rebate, you can check the status of it online at the IRS.gov under Refund Status.

Unbeknown to many, tax breaks for small businesses were also included as part of the stimulus package. For one, the government increased the depreciation ceiling on the amount of money a business can deduct for a single year. This is a one-time tax code change that will only apply for 2008. The ceiling almost doubled from $128,000 to $250,000. Many will benefit from this, but how many small businesses spend this much a year on their equipment? First thing is, as a small business, you have to be making money. If you're a young business and not yet making money, you don't get any benefit at all.

While it’s impossible to predict exactly what effects this year’s stimulus package will have on the economy, it’s up to you to take advantage of the new tax breaks as well as prepare accordingly for what could be an influx of customers coming through your doors. Focus on your sales, and the rest will follow.

The small business movement is just beginning! They will be able to ride the back of the go green and environmental friendly movement. By shopping local and purchasing locally grown fruits and vegetables you cut shipping costs (and related fuel burning!) and help the environment. So many advantages to shopping local.

Now if only we could get the small business owners to keep shop open 24 hours...

I would hope that maybe they would have given business a break that would help them all, like maybe they would get some of there taxes back? Its just an idea but think about it if all small businesses got an extra 1-2 or even 3k back they could use that to advertise or restock or whatever and would have help them out allot.

I'm skeptical about how much these rebate checks are really going to spur the economy. Isn't the reason why the government is sending out rebate checks because a lot of people are behind in payments so they can't afford to purchase goods? So, with this in mind, I would imagine a vast majority of people will use the rebate money to pay off debts and save in their bank accounts.

The first thing i did with my "stimulis" check was put it right into my savings account. I am not planning on purchasing anything anytime soon with the money. Not only that but Nancy Pelosi was talking today about how we are going to need another stimulis package in the very near future and that this one wasn't enough. She went on to also say that "The president has for a long time been in denial on the state of the economy" He wants to see how this one goes before looking at another.

To further touch on what Dave has said in this article, if there is a newer business out there gets no benefit. This country should adopt the program that Major League Baseball works by. Luxury Tax, or revenue sharing. If Wal-Mart can be out there making billions in profit, they should be forced to pay a "tax" to the business owners out there who do not make very much money at all. So that way in this program it would help small business owners compete even though they do not have the millions to do so.

When Obama chosen as the President of United States, people knew that change would come in America. And now, some of you welcome the changes that would happen in the country most especially if it is for the good of the entire citizen in the country. Barack Obama is hatching a plan to get you extra cash on payday so you won't need a payday loan. He is proposing a tax cut and what he calls the Make Work Pay Credit. It’s a different strategy for stimulating the economy. So far all the efforts that have been made by the current administration to get the economy back on track seem to be hurting instead of helping and the need for a payday loan with many people has increased. It’s impossible to tell the future; maybe the steps that have already been taken will help straighten things out in the long run. But the economy has been growing steadily worse since the mortgage crisis and the credit crunch hit. Obama is hoping that bigger checks on payday will help restore consumer confidence so you won't need to take out a payday loan.
