Tips from November 6, 2009

The Small Business tips today discuss naming a start up business.

  1. Think of a creative and recognizable name for your business. Be memorable, quirky, and unique, yet professional for business purposes.
  2. Before settling on a business name check your phone books, online domains & with the county clerk's office for availability.
  3. Consider a business name that's obvious to your business purpose and works in your favor for SEO as well. It often helps the customer if a name is self-explanatory. A name like Kim's Social Media Services tells me right away that this is a social media servicing company by Kim.
  4. Register the business name as a trademark with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. You get legal protection for the business's name. Find out more at http://www.uspto.gov.

Daily Overview: When naming your business be creative, be obvious, make sure it's available and register it so it's legally yours.

Great post! I'd like to add as an addendum to #2 that comprehensive research is needed. Checking preliminary sources is great because hey, it's free! But a comprehensive search is going to consist of looking at similarities in Sound, Appearance or Meaning (SAM) in the Federal & State trademark files as well as Common-Law files. The SAM rule is what the USPTO uses to determine if marks infringe or not: http://tess2.uspto.gov/webaka/html/warning.htm
