Advisory Committee Offers Advice for ITT Tech-Mt. Prospect Students

Posted by Mount Prospect Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday, June 16, 2009

On April 23, 2009 the ITT Tech-Mt. Prospect Advisory Committee met on campus.  The school’s Advisory Committee is comprised of members from local government and industry who gather two times each year to provide information and advice to school administration. Their suggestions help ensure that ITT Tech courses and programs meet real-world needs and demands.

At April’s meeting, Committee members had solid advice for students on both hard and soft skills needed for career development. Important hard skills include knowledge of Microsoft Office; understanding of technical standards related to a particular field; and professional certifications, which can give a job candidate an edge over another candidate.  In addition, a student applying for and excelling at a job today should have well-developed soft skills, including problem solving ability; effective oral communication and presentation skills; as well as the ability to write with clarity and precision. Committee members stressed the importance of active listening, for any student striving to succeed at a job interview or in the workplace.
